A new $40 million mixed-use development in Kearns will create 82 affordable homes for very low-income households.
Local leaders and developers from Housing Connect and Brinshore Development gathered in late July to break ground for the Kearns Station Apartments. The project will be built at the site of a historic train station depot that served the former Kearns Army Air Base during World War II. It’s located where the Smart Kids Development Center sits, and the project will incorporate a 4,150-square-foot childcare facility operated by the Smart Kids program, providing childcare for resident families while remaining available to the broader community at affordable rates.
“Today is about honoring this property and what it has meant for the Kearns community, as well as looking ahead at what it becomes,” said Janice Kimball, CEO of Housing Connect. “For more than 40 years, this site has provided affordable housing for local families. When this project is complete, we will have preserved 32 units and we will add 50 additional affordable homes on this site.”
Housing Connect is the public housing authority serving Salt Lake County. Founded in 1970, its mission is to connect people and communities to quality affordable housing opportunities while promoting self-sufficiency and neighborhood revitalization. It is working on the project in partnership with Brinshore Development and with support from Utah Housing Corp., the Utah Division of Housing and Community Development, Citibank, The Richman Group, Advantage Capital, BCM Contractors and 22 Design Lab.
Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2028.
